Another popular attraction in Mauritius is the experience of deep sea fishing. The Island offers ideal conditions for deep-sea fishing as the ocean drops down to 70 metres just a kilometer away from the Barrier reef. Huge fishes such as the Blue Marlin roam the seas and hunt around the Island from November to April.

Species found in Mauritius includes:

• Blue and black marlin
• All types of sharks (Mako, Hammerhead, Blue, Tiger Shark to name a few)
• Varieties of tuna (skipjack, yellow fin or dog tooth)

A number of deep sea fishing competitions have become regular events over the years. The most prestigious one is the Marlin World Cup, which is organized in December.

Mauritius holds several world fishing records (IGFA), including a Mako shark weighing in at 1,115 pounds, a blue shark of 400 pounds, a bonito of 415 pounds, a white tuna of 224 pounds etc. Other specimens recently caught include blue marlins of 1,430 and 1,355 pounds!
