Getting married in Mauritius

The “Civil Status Act” states that marriage of non-residents can take place the day following publication of marriage banns.

However, the couple must obtain a certificate issued by the Prime Minister’s Office and given to the Registrar of Civil Status Officer stating that they are not Mauritian citizens or Mauritian residents.

The document must be accompanied by 2 birth certificate copies of both spouses and of their passports (first three pages), as well as any other document in cases of divorce or widowhood.

Request for a non-resident certificate must reach the Civil Status Office at least 10 days before date set for marriage. Marriage can take place in the presence of a Civil Status Officer at the Registrar of Civil Status or at the hotel.

Civil Marriage

The civil marriage can be celebrated either at the Civil Status Office within in the locality of your hotel or at the hotel itself.

You must produce your original documents to the Civil Status officer in Port-Louis and swear an affidavit at the Supreme Court.

You will be taken to the Civil Status Office in the locality of your hotel for the publication of the bans.

The civil marriage may take place 24 hours after the publication of the bans, except on Saturdays, Sundays or Public Holidays.

Formalities

Certified copies of the following documents in either English or French, to reach Mauritius at least 60 days before your arrival. Please note the originals of these documents must be taken to Mauritius with you. If any document is missing, it will not be possible for your ceremony to take place.

  • Your professions
  • Your address
  • Birth certificates
  • Form requesting a civil marriage in Mauritius
  • First three pages of each passport

If one or both clients are divorced or widowed, a photocopy of the relevant document attesting the divorce or death of the spouse. We will also need the full names of the previous spouse and where applicable your maiden surname.
